Performing Arts Houston Presents Blind Boys from Alabama

Performing Arts Houston presents Blind Boys of Alabama for their special Christmas performance with Sarah Grace & the Soul. The gospel legends will perform their renditions of holiday classics like White Christmas, Silent Night and more at Jones Hall on December 4, 2022. Tickets start at $29 at performingartshouston.org.

In the seven decades that Blind Boys of Alabama have sung together, the group has defined the sound of the American South and helped keep its spirit alive. The original members met as children at the Alabama Institute for the Blind in the 1930s and began volunteering at fundraisers for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. to perform. They released their debut single “I Can See Everybody’s Mother But Mine” in 1948, a year-long recording career that earned them five GRAMMY Awards, induction into the Gospel Music Hall of Fame, and collaborations with Mavis Staples, Stevie Wonder, Prince, and others.

In 2013 the band collaborated with Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon to release I’ll Find A Way, a collection of old and new spiritual songs that introduced the Blind Boys to a new generation of fans. Since their debut single in 1948, The Blind Boys have been hailed as “gospel titans” (Rolling Stone) and have performed on some of the world’s most prestigious stages. They have reached the highest levels of performance in their 75+ year career with no sign of slowing down.

Joining the Blind Boys is Houston native Sarah Grace, a graduate student at the University of Houston. The singer was a semi-finalist on The Voice season 15 and quickly became a fan favorite with her soulful singing. Their repertoire spans many genres, from pop to vintage blues to American roots styles. Sarah Grace, along with her band The Soul, was crowned “Best Newcomers” by the Houston Press and won the 2018 Old Settlers Music Festival Youth Competition.

For over 55 years, Performing Arts Houston has connected audiences with extraordinary artists through diverse performances and learning experiences in Houston communities and schools. We invite everyone to ignite and nurture passion for the performing arts and to explore the vast landscape of artistic expression to discover new understandings of ourselves, create community, inspire dialogue and enrich our world.
