Yam Banks, La’Damian Webb of South Alabama, is awarded the first-team All-Sun belt

South Alabama running back La’Damian Webb and safety Yam Banks have earned spots on the All-Sun Belt Conference football first-team announced Thursday.

Webb and Banks were the only Jaguars to make the first team, although their team finished first in the West Division 10-2 in the regular season. South Alabama was also snubbed at the conference’s individual awards.

Coastal Carolina quarterback Grayson McCall was named Sun Belt Player of the Year for the third straight year, while James Madison quarterback Todd Centeio was both Offensive Player of the Year and Newcomer of the Year (he’s a transfer from the state of Colorado). Coastal Carolina wide receiver Jared Brown was named freshman of the year.

Troy linebacker Carlton Martial was named Defensive Player of the Year. The Trojans’ Jon Sumrall was named Coach of the Year after advancing 10-2 in his debut season in the conference championship game.

Webb has rushed for 1,015 yards and 13 touchdowns in 11 games this season and ranks second in the conference in yards per game (92.3). The Opelika junior, who transferred from Jones (Miss.) College to South Alabama this season, missed one game and parts of two others through injury.

Banks is tied for the Sun Belt lead with five interceptions and 10 pass breakups. The sophomore from Ridgeland, Miss., also has 45 tackles this season, six tackles for loss, five quarterback hurries, a fumble recovery and a sack.

Wide receiver Jalen Wayne and kicker Diego Guajardo earned second-team All-Sun Belt honors. Webb has also earned a third-team spot as an all-purpose defender along with center James Jackson and cornerback Darrell Luter.

Four South Alabama players received honorable mentions: quarterback Carter Bradley, wide receiver Devin Voisin, defensive lineman Wy’Kevious Thomas, and safety Jaden Voisin. The Voisins are twin brothers.
