Why is this abandoned Indiana bridge covered in shoes?

This spooky abandoned bridge in Indiana is trapped with sneakers, making it even more spooky.

We have hundreds of bridges throughout the state of Indiana. Some are more complex than others. Many of them are still standing, although they are no longer in use. One of these bridges caught my eye this morning on Facebook. There was a post by a group I belong to that showed pictures of an old, abandoned bridge in Greene County, Indiana, which made me stop and really look at the pictures. Why? Not because the bridge is old, but because of what can be found on the bridge itself. Of course, the bridge didn’t always look like this. This is what the bridge looked like five years ago:

Black Creek Bridge

Black Creek Bridge, also known as Greene County Bridge #188, in Greene County was built circa 1890. That’s a pretty old bridge. However, the bridge was closed a few years ago. You can see how rustic and run down this bridge is. However, the most striking feature of this bridge is the shoes draped all over it. Nathan Engleking recently snapped some photos of the bridge. Try them out to see how spooky and weird this bridge looks with all those shoes.

Why are there shoes on this bridge?

That’s the big question here, isn’t it? I tried searching via google to see if I could find these answers. Unfortunately there was nothing about it. However, there could be a few reasons for this. At Murray State University, where I went to college, there is a tree with shoes. This shoe tree marks the place where couples met for the first time. Couples would return after getting married to put their shoes on the tree. Maybe there is something similar with this bridge. Or maybe it just started with one person draping their shoes across the bridge and other people joining in just for fun. I’m curious what the reason is, so if you know, please feel free to reach out to me and share this story.

Check out the inside of this now-abandoned brick factory in Indiana

Located in Vermillion County, Indiana, this former factory was the last coal-fired brick factory in America. I can honestly say I’ve never seen anything like it – I guess that’s why these pictures caught my eye.
