PROVO, Utah – Where will BYU play football in the 2022 bowl season? We’ll find out today as we have Selection Sunday.
One thing we do know is that BYU will be attending an ESPN Events bowl game.
What Bowl Game Will BYU Football Play In?
BYU goes into the postseason with an overall record of 7-5. As a result, as contractually agreed, ESPN will build BYU into one of the 16 bowl games they own. These fall under the ESPN events umbrella for bowl games. But within those 16, some games have already established matchups, such as the Hawaii Bowl, which will see San Diego State take on Middle Tennessee. Then there are ESPN event games like the Las Vegas Bowl with specific conference links (SEC vs. Pac-12).
During an interview at Coordinators Corner last Monday, BYU offensive coordinator Aaron Roderick said he heard that BYU’s bowl date is in three Saturdays, which would be December 17th. But he added that he said, “We’ll see.”
One of those ESPN event bowl games that lands on December 17th is the New Mexico Bowl. Many national bowl projections suggest BYU to play in the Land of Enchantment. But some have an independent New Mexico state taking that spot after the Aggies received an exemption to be eligible for the Bowl despite two wins over non-FBS teams.
New Mexico State Athletic Director Mario Moccia told Las Cruces Sun-News that it is “out of the question” for the Aggies to play at the nearby New Mexico Bowl.
This will be BYU’s final postseason as an FBS Independent. Then, beginning in 2023, BYU will enter the Big 12 Conference and will track a pool of games tied to that league.
Let’s take one final look at what the college football world is projecting for BYU’s bowl destination for the 2022 season.
