Texas LB Devin Richardson enters the NCAA transfer portal



Texas linebacker Devin Richardson entered the NCAA transfer portal as a graduate transfer, a source with knowledge of the situation told Horns247 on Friday. The 6-foot-3-inch, 234-pound Richardson played in 20 games over two seasons with the Longhorns.


Richardson, a Fort Bend Hightower product who was a member of the New Mexico State recruit class in 2018, played in 14 games and made 10 starts in two seasons (one full season, one shortened) with the Aggies before becoming one of the 2021 den Forty Acres changed head coaches from five FBS players Steve Sarkisian recruited from the transfer portal before his first season on the job.


Richardson was a 2019 Freshman All-American and recorded 69 tackles, three tackles for loss, two sacks and three forced fumbles in 10 games for New Mexico State as a redshirt freshman. The Aggies did not play in fall 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic and Richardson played in one of New Mexico State’s two games in spring 2021 before entering the transfer portal and selecting the Longhorns.


After recording four tackles in 11 of Texas’ 12 games during a 5-7 campaign in 2021, Richardson totaled 11 tackles and 1.5 tackles to a loss as a fifth grader. Richardson had four tackles and 0.5 tackles to a loss in a 52-10 opener against Louisiana-Monroe for his most prolific performance as the Longhorns, while he had two tackles and a tackle to a loss in a 55-14 away win over Kansas .


Richardson has one remaining season of collegiate eligibility due to an extra season granted to him by the NCAA as a result of the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on the 2020 season.
